Indonesia is one of the countries with the highest number of freshwater fish species on the Asian continent, namely approximately 1,300 species of freshwater fish, and these fish are spread across three regions, namely the Sunda Shelf, Sahul Shelf and Wallace Shelf, based on geographic data. Nilem fish (Osteochilus vittatus) is a species of freshwater fish that is widespread in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia. The method used in this research is literature study research. This research aims to explore the bioecological aspects of nilem fish, including geographical distribution, natural habitat, life cycle, feeding behavior, as well as new findings related to this species. Through literature reviews and field findings, this journal provides an in-depth understanding of the ecological role of nilem fish in tropical aquatic ecosystems as well as their ecological implications for conservation and cultivation. Nilem fish populations in the wild are under pressure due to human activities, such as water pollution, deforestation around rivers, and climate change. Conservation efforts need to focus on protecting natural habitats and monitoring wild populations. Apart from that, the development of sustainable nilem cultivation could be a solution to reduce over-exploitation of natural populations of this fish. So it can be concluded that Nilem fish have an important role in freshwater ecosystems and have great potential in fish cultivation. Despite its widespread distribution, pressure from environmental change and human activities threatens the survival of wild populations of this fish. Therefore, conservation measures integrated with the development of sustainable cultivation are crucial to maintain the sustainability of this species in the future.
