Pengaruh Jenis Desikan dan Periode Simpan pada Viabilitas dan Vigor Benih Kapas (Gossypium hirsutum)

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) is a fiber-producing plantation crop that is processed into textile industry materials. Cotton seeds are oily seeds with a fat content of about 32.5%. The hygroscopic nature of seeds means their moisture content is always balanced with the surrounding environment, so the addition of absorbent materials, such as desiccant, is needed to control the moisture around the seeds and keep them dry during storage. This study aims to determine the effect of desiccant type on cotton seed storage. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with a factorial pattern of 3 replications. The first factor was the type of desiccant: no desiccant (S0), wood charcoal (S1), husk ash (S2), and silica gel (S3). The second factor was the storage period of 30 days (D1), 45 days (D2), and 60 days (D3). Each treatment consisted of 3 replicates, each with 100 seeds. The parameters observed were seed moisture content, germination, vigor index, seed germination uniformity, and germination rate. The results showed that seed storage duration significantly affected seed moisture content, with an increase during storage.
