Abstract

This community service program was conducted to address the low quality of Robusta coffee beans produced by farmers in Penantian Village, Ulubelu District, Tanggamus Regency. Most farmers had not yet implemented proper post-harvest sorting techniques, which significantly affect both the quality and market price of coffee beans. The program aimed to enhance farmer’s knowledge and technical skills in coffee bean sorting while establishing a pilot sorting unit as a sustainable learning center for the community. The implementation methods included counseling, technical training, field demonstrations, mentoring, and evaluation through pre-test and post-test assessments. The results of the activity showed an increase in farmer’s understanding from 25% to over 80% after the training. Farmers were able to identify defect beans, classify coffee quality grades, and perform both manual sorting and water flotation techniques. The program also produced a sorting demonstration using 50 kg of coffee beans from partner farmers, serving as a practical model that can be independently replicated. The application of proper sorting techniques was shown to improve product quality by approximately 30–40% and has strong potential to increase the selling value of the coffee. With the establishment of the pilot sorting unit, this initiative is expected to generate sustainable impacts and enhance the competitiveness of Robusta coffee produced in the village.
