Efisiensi Penyiraman dan Kelembapan Media Bibit Mucuna bracteata melalui Penambahan Kristal Hidrogel

Mucuna bracteata is widely used as a leguminous cover crop in oil palm plantations for its role in protecting soil, suppressing weeds, and improving soil quality. However, seedling production requires adequate and regular watering, which may increase labor and water use, especially during dry periods. This study aimed to evaluate watering efficiency and growing-media moisture in M. bracteata seedlings by adding crystal hydrogel at different watering intervals. The study was conducted in the greenhouse of the Indonesian Palm Oil Technology Institute, Medan, North Sumatra, from August to October 2025. A non-factorial completely randomized design was used, consisting of five treatments: without hydrogel with watering twice a day, hydrogel with watering twice a day, hydrogel with watering once a day, hydrogel with watering once every three days, and hydrogel with watering once every five days. The observed variables were plant height, number of leaves, plant fresh and dry weight, growing media fresh and dry weight, and media moisture. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance, followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test at the 5% level. The results showed additional of crystal hydrogel to the growing media of M. bracteata seedlings under different watering intervals significantly affected media moisture at 4–8 weeks after planting. The hydrogel treatment, with watering once every five days, still produced seedling growth that was comparable to the treatment watered twice daily, improving watering efficiency in M. bracteata seedling production.
