Abstract

Sugar is an importance and strategic commodity for Indonesian people, because It is not only perceived for consumers as end users, but It is also as row material for certain food industry in order to increase production and value-added. Demand for sugar increased in line with increases in population, income per capita, and the development of food processing and beverage industries. This study aims to: analyze the development of the harvested area, production and productivity of sugarcane, the development of the national sugar consumption and imports, and to find alternative suggestions enhancement of national sugar production. The data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Study results showed that sugar production in the country is still not able to meet consumption needs, thus increasing sugar imports. Sugar import is not only done to suppress the price of sugar in the off season but also to meet the needs of the national sugar. There are several problems associated with the national sugar production, including: sugarcane productivity is low, the yield of sugar cane to sugar is low, and technical efficiency of sugar mills are also low, associated with processing machines are old.
